East Moving On To State Finals

Caruthers scores 24 in state semi win
No Rochester city school has won a state boys basketball title since 1986.

East High is now one win away.

Dontay Caruthers scored 24 points as the Orientals opened a big lead and held off a 4th quarter rally by Red Hook to win their Class A state semifinal 57-45 at the Glens Falls Civic Center Saturday afternoon.

Tommie Banks added 11 points and 15 rebounds for East.

The Orientals led 10-7 late in the first quarter and then exploded for 19 consecutive points. The lead at halftime was 29-13.

Red Hook chipped away at the East lead throughout the second half, but not nearly fast enough. East was ahead by 13 after three quarters and by eight with four minutes to play. Red Hook got as close as five, but with less than a minute remaining, and the Orientals finished the game at the free throw line.

"We want it for all the city schools... East High.. the Rochester City School District," said Caruthers. "We're just trying to prove to everybody that we were meant to be here."

East will face Scotia-Glenville in Sunday's state championship game. S-G is 24-0 and thumped John Glenn 81-50 in the semifinals. The game tips at 1:30pm from the Glens Falls Civic Center.
