Fairport Hockey Prepared For State Semifinals

Red Raiders eyeing first state title but first need to beat Massena
For every player on the Fairport hockey team, this weekend's contest marks uncharted territory.

The Red Raiders are in the state Frozen Four for the first time since 2008. Fairport is still looking for their first state title in hockey.

Fairport will take on Massena of Section X on Saturday, March 8th at 12:00 from the Utica Auditorium. Should the Red Raiders win, they would face the winner of Scarsdale (I) and Ithaca (IV).

At practice this week, the Red Raiders were loose, knowing that their biggest games are coming up, but they don't plan on changing how they prepare.

"It's crazy to think it's almost over. We're so excited and we really think we can bring it home the title," says senior Quinn Weidemer.

Fairport wasn't seen as one of the favorites in Section V, but the Red Raiders won 12 of their last 14 games.

"It's been really crazy the roll we've been on especially after a slow start to the year," says goalie Ethan Kaiser.

Between the pipes on Saturday will be the sophomore Kaiser who hasn't allowed a goal in over two games. He took over the #1 job midway through the season, and has instilled total confidence in his teammates.

"No hesitation at all. I knew he's been a good goalie ever since I met him," says Weidemer.

"I've been playing my game lateley. I like to come out and close down the angles," says Kaiser. "I'm quick and I think it's pretty hard for the shooters to score."

Massena will not be an easy task. They also happen to be known as the Red Raiders, and were undefeated in Section X play.

"Apparently, they're farmers and they hit hard," according to Kaiser. "We have to be ready to match that."
