McLeod Miracle Gives Wayne Championship

Scores two buckets in 5 seconds for comeback win
Shyana McLeod scored the tying basket with five seconds to play, stole the ensuing inbound pass and then scored the game winner with less than a second left to give (4)Wayne a stunning 61-59 victory over (3)Geneva in the Class A2 sectional final at Finger Lakes Community College Friday night.

The Eagles trailed the entire game. Geneva led 14-3 early in the first quarter. They were up 16-9 after eight minutes, had an 10 point lead at the half and still was ahead 45-38 after three quarters. Wayne closed to 56-51 with four minutes to play and McLeod finally got the Eagles within one possession by hitting two free throws with just under two minutes remaining.

After a Geneva free throw, Brianna Schmid hit a half-runner, half-hook shot to get within 59-57. A Geneva turnover with 11 seconds left set up the dramatic finish.

McLeod was named tournament MVP. She scored 17 points in Wayne's first ever sectional title. Schmid led all scorers with 21.

Mia Morrison topped the Panthers with 20 points while Janee Joyner added 13.

Wayne moves on to face Pittsford Sutherland in Class A state qualifier on Tuesday. The Knights won in equally dramatic fashion when Liz Greendyke stole an inbounds pass and found Abby Judd for the game winning bucket with five seconds to play as Sutherland slipped by Mercy 42-40. The site and time are to be determined.
