Wild Finish Allows Victor To Advance

Webster Thomas season ends with one point loss
It wasn't exactly a finish that would make John Wooden proud.

(8)Victor escaped with a 43-42 win over (9)Webster Thomas in a Class AA First Round game Tuesday night in Victor. The choices in the final 15 seconds will likely have both coaches shaking their heads.

With Victor up two, 14 seconds to play and the shot clock off, Fran Valenti shot the ball anyway. She got an exceptionally friendly roll to put the Blue Devils ahead by four. It turned out to be an important bucket because Candaisy Crawford quickly answered with a long three-pointer to get Webster Thomas within one--even though she had time for a closer three or even a layup.

However, Thomas was out of timeouts and Victor played keep away long enough to run the final three seconds off the clock and win by a point.

Emily Gyles and Abbie Hill each hit three-pointers to give the Blue Devils a 40-33 lead with under three minutes left in the game.

Crawford then scored six points in a row to get the Titans within one at 40-39. Thomas even had the ball with a chance to take the lead, but Hill made two monster plays to prevent it. First, she intercepted a pass to stop Thomas' offensive chance. After Victor made one of two free throws to go up two, Hill rebounded the miss and kept possession for Valenti's eventual game winner.

Kate Leonard led Victor with 14 points. Crawford topped all scorers with 24 in defeat for the Titans.

Victor moves on to Friday's quarterfinals, where they will meet top seeded Penfield in Penfield. Tip time is 7pm.
