Irondequoit Wins Battle Of State Titans

Eagles get three in 3rd period to get past AQ
Connor Hynes netted the game winning goal for Irondequoit just a minute after Aquinas had tied and the Eagles tacked on two more to beat the Irish 5-2 in a battle of the top two Division II teams in the state at Lakeshore Ice Arena.

Jimmy Diliberto erased a 2-0 deficit for Aquinas all by himself. In the 2nd period, Diliberto won a faceoff towards the Irondequoit net, chased the puck down and shoveled it in to get AQ within 2-1. Early in the third period, Matthew Depetres fed Diliberto in the slot. Diliberto backhanded a shot through the five-hole to knot the score at two.

Hynes shot was a bit of a bad break for Aquinas. It was deflected by an AQ defenseman almost the moment after the puck left Hynes' stick. The shot just ducked under the crossbar for a 3-2 lead. Just 35 seconds later, Mitchell Culver slid a pass along the backboards to Louis Cup on the other side of the net. Cup jammed the puck inside the post for a 4-2 lead.

Anthony Thurston capped the scoring with just under three minutes to play. Thurston also opened the scoring just 51 seconds after the opening faceoff. Matthew Comanzo made it 2-0 six minutes later when his low shot from the point avoided a gaggle of legs and found the net.

Irondequoit improves to 11-1 while Aquinas suffered its first loss and dropped to 9-1-2.
