Airport Bracing For Snowstorm

The day before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and Old Man Winter is messing up plans.

So far, snowfall at the Greater Rochester International Airport has been moderate. The airport has a snow removal plan in place and plenty of staff. Planes are flying and for the most part, all of them are on time. It is a busy holiday travel day with folks either leaving or coming home to celebrate Thanksgiving. At last check, the departure and arrival boards only had one cancellation to Toronto. The rest of the flights were on time. The line at the security checkpoint is manageable, although that could quickly change with delays across the country. Folks we talked to are taking it in stride. Most came prepared with extra batteries for cell phones and tablets. Airport director Michael Giardino says being prepared is key.

"This morning we went to a two-shift concept which means 12 on, 12 off. So all of our staff will be here ready. All of our equipment is 100 percent operational and capable. So we're ready to go," Giardino said.

If you are flying out Tuesday or Wednesday, call your airline ahead of time to see if your flight is delayed or canceled. Plus, give yourself plenty of time. Arrive about an hour and a half before your flight is set to take off.
