Teachers motivate kids in many ways. Alison Skvarla uses her passion for music with kids at Flower City School Number 54. Here's our News 8 Golden Apple surprise.

Principal Lessie Hamilton-Rose got the ball rolling by excusing every member of the Show choir at Flower city School Number 54 to help us honor Music Teacher Alison Skvarla.

Several dozen of us walked into the choir room and he was shocked! "Oh my Goodness! Oh my goodness I can't believe it!"

The Show Choir is how this whole story began. Ron Reddy is one of the adult students Miss Skvarla gives private lessons too. Ron saw them perform and contacted us. "I see the enthusiasm in the kids faces and the dedication she has for them. And it's just inspiring for the children and how much she gives to them."

Alison says "You have to meet them where they are and love what they love. And just give them very single, every single minute of your time that you possibly can and lots and lots of love, right guys?"

Principal Hamilton-Rose says Alison teaches kids more than singing and dancing. "And music helps them excel in their academics so she's helping them with that, with the core standards she infuses that into her curriculum as well."

"I'm just overwhelmed" says Alison. "I never even could dream I'd get a Golden Apple Award. Even a nomination. Oh my goodness."

Alison Skvarla is a news 8 Golden Apple Award winner.  You can read the letter we received from Ron nominating her if you look below.

Dear News 8,

I would like to nominate Mrs. Alison Skvarla, a music teacher for the Rochester City School District, for the Golden Apple Award. Alison has been teaching vocal and music education in the RCSD for seven years. At the present time she teaches grades 2 through 6 at school 54. Her hard work and commitment to her students is amazing.
The children in her vocal classes were chosen to perform at a recent RCSD Board of Education ceremony and were also chosen to sing on Saturday December 1, 2012 for the lighting of the Liberty Pole in downtown Rochester for the start of the Christmas season.
Also in December my wife and I had the pleasure of attending the school 54 Christmas concert. Mrs. Skvarla's talent and hard work were truly amazing, and was enjoyed by all in attendance. Mrs. Skvarla goes above and beyond for all of her students all of the time. I'm sure the Golden Apple Award for her commitment, effort and caring would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Ron Reddy
