Amerks Open 2013 Hockey Season

The Rochester Americans open their 2013-2014 season against the Calder Cup champs, the Grand Rapid Griffins tonight. There is one member of the team whose face you may not recognize, but whose voice you surely will.

It's a brand new season, with a new crop of players, but one thing has remained the same -- the voice of the Rochester Americans.

"If you're going to be in the minor leagues, there's no better place to be than here," says Don Stevens, the long-time radio broadcaster for the Amerks. "This is a hockey community, it's a sports community."

And it's a community that award-winning announcer Don Stevens has called home for nearly 3 decades now.
In that time he's seen a lot of faces come and go, all of them growing along the way.

"You see the players that are progressing, you turn on the tv. You just about can't watch a team anywhere, tv or in person, where there isn't a former Amerk on it," says Stevens. "So it's fun to see these kids come in and grow and they become such great individuals off the ice. They're tremendous people."

Don says there's really just one downfall to his job.

"People will say to me,' what a great job. All you do is travel around, you go to games,' and I tell them, 'you know what? The first two years were great. The last 45 have been kind of a drag,' but the travel is just grueling," explains Stevens.

But the pros far outweigh the cons, and he's still here calling all the action over the airwaves, and the classics we hope to hear many more of this season -
"Here comes the captain of the team Matt Ellis down the right wing boards he shoots, he scooooores!"

As an added bonus, former long-time PA announcer, Tom George, will be announcing tonight's game.

The game gets underway at 7:05PM.
