Dr. Mark Mirabelli of Highland Family Medicine discussed breast cancer awareness and the importance of screening Thursday morning on News 8 at Sunrise.

Dr. Mirabelli said 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer during their lifetime.  It's the third most common cancer killer of women.

He said current recommendations for women include mammograms to screen for breast cancer beginning at age 50 and continuing every other year up to the age of 74.  Some women may need to start screenings at the age of 40, especially those who have a family history of the disease.

Dr. Mirabelli added that with the advancements in medicine, the survival rate from breast cancer has improved significantly, offering hope for women.

He recommended women who want more information about breast cancer and screenings should contact their primary care physician or OBGYN.
