County Parks Director Appointed To Legislature Amidst Golf Courses Controversy

Monroe County Parks Director Larry Staub was appointed a new post just days after the county decided to pull its contract for maintenance of county golf courses.

Staub will leave his post as Parks Director to join the County Legislature. The county says it has nothing to do with the timing of the audit of the department and its contract with Jack Tindale. The legislature has some holes to fill, including a spot representing Perinton and East Rochester. GOP Chairman Bill Reilich appointed Staub, who has served the county for nearly 25 years.

"He's been a part of that community for a number of years. He understands the needs of that community and he will make a good representative," Reilich said.

On Friday, the county announced it had pulled vendor Jack Tindale from a contract with the Parks Department to do upkeep for county golf courses. After complaints of disrepair and now a state audit, the contract is ending three years early. County Democrats questioned why nothing was done sooner.

"The county is taking it over in poor condition. What exactly is going to be the cost to get it to a condition that is playable," legislator Joe Morelle Jr. said.

The county will not have to find a new vendor to take over the care and maintenance of the county's three municipal golf courses. Submissions are due by February 7th. The state audit is due in the next few weeks. But the county says Staub's new job has nothing to do with that. Reilich echoed the same sentiments.

"I think it's more tied in with the timing of a vacant County Legislature seat. If the legislature position didn't come up he would still be our Parks Director," he said.

Staub will take on his new position in the legislature on January 30th. News 8 attempted to reach Staub for comment, but he has not responded.
