CPA Tom Walpole discussed the importance of ethics in business Monday morning on News 8 at Sunrise.

Walpole said Bernie Madoff is the prime business example of the need for proper ethics, but other exists as well.  He said for any business, ethics must be a priority, and that starts at the top with owners and managers.

Businesses should have a handbook that details what ethical behavior is and make sure those policies are enforced.  In addition, there should be a whistleblower policy in place so that employees can feel free to report unethical behavior without the fear of repercussion.

Walpole also advised that ethics should be practices at work and on private time, and that includes social networking.

The Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation will present its annual Ethie Award Tuesday at Rochester's Convention Center.  This year's finalists are D4, Martino Flynn, Optimation Technology, Rochester Rotary Club, Saelig Company and Zaretsky and Associates.

This will be Rochester's 11th annual awards luncheon.  Over the last 10 years two of the local award winners have gone on to win the American Business Ethics Award at the national level and another local winner received honorable mention.
