911 Dispatchers Honored

The unsung heroes of the first response team get their due.
They're the unsung heroes of the first response team and today is a day to honor them.  It's all part of National Telecommunications Week.   Call takers and dispatchers at the 9-1-1 call center on Main street got together for an awards ceremony today.

Their director, John Merklinger, says it's an opportunity to remind the public of all the 9-1-1 staff does each day, ""The average person only needs 911 once or twice in their lifetime. Public safety is very important to the community but it's forgotten about sometimes, and 911 definitely falls in that category."

Rochester's 9-1-1 call center serves 84 different public safety agencies.  It handled more than one-million calls last year.
