Answers Sought In Newland Murder Case

The family of murder victim Jeff Newland offers a $5,000 reward leading to the arrest of his killer.
The family of a local attorney found murdered last fall is offering a reward  for information that lead police to his killer.  Jeff Newland, 49,  was found shot to death in a cornfield in Pittsford last October.   No one is in custody.  Sheriff's deputies have few leads.   Newland's friends who are urging anyone with information to come forward.

You might say Newland never left his childhood far behind.  Jeff was part of a tight-knit group of friends who met in middle school in Fairport.

"He has a good strong heart,  in terms of giving back to the community," said Kathy McClare, Newland's friend.

On October 21, Newland's family reported him missing.  Later the same day, his car was found parked on the side of Golf Avenue in Pittsford.  The next day, about 300 feet away in a cornfield,  police found Newland's body.  He'd been shot in the head.   McClare is hoping a $5,000 cash reward offered by Newland's family will encourage someone to come forward.

"There is a lot of hope.  And I think sometimes that hope is dwindling.  There's no information that's coming out.  There's a lot of questions, conjecture.  And that leaves this rampant wonder and worry about what really did happen," said McClare.

Newland's friend, Mike McPherson drives by the murder scene on his way home from work each day.  The thought of Jeff never leaves his mind.

"He's done nothing but devote his whole life to doing nothing but helping other people.  From Ronald McDonald House to Big Brothers/Big Sisters to the Mentor Program, he's just always helped others.  So I find it kind of hard to believe that anyone would want to do harm to Jeff," said Mike McPherson, Newland's friend.

Newland left behind a wife and two children.  He worked for several civic groups and was well-known for his volunteer work.  He was the founder of a mentor program with Lifespan.

Anyone with information on Newland's murder is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff's office at 753-4178.
