Local middle school students competed Saturday for a chance to show off their science projects at a national competition.

Fourteen Rochester middle schools faced off at St. John Fisher College for the Regional Science Olympiad Competition. After watching several experiments, judges will determine the area's top students in the science field. Bay Trail Middle School worked hard to create helicopters powered by rubber bands.

"I love science and it is important for me to do well in this because science is my favorite subject in school," Bay Trail student Rachel Benkovich said.

Saturday was the first round of the competition. The winning schools will move on to two more rounds before the national competition at the University of Central Florida in May.
