Browncroft Neighbors Want School Trailer Removed

They say the portable classroom is out of character with the neighborhood.
Some Browncroft neighbors are tired of looking at a portable classroom outside School #46.

The Newcastle Rd. school sits in the city's wealthiest neighborhoods and in a historic district. Residents say the trailer has been there for at least 10 years. It houses pre-kindergarten and art classes.

"This is a beautiful school building. It's on the historic register. This neighborhood is on the historic register," said Jim Bishop. "It's not in keeping with the neighborhood."

After listening to residents, the Rochester City School District has agreed to put in some landscaping, but the portable classroom will remain.

"It's a spectacular building and a beautiful neighborhood, so we want to be great partners with the community," said Chief of Operations Mike Schmidt. "We've been very happy with their support of School #46. I think we'll have some landscaping done there, certainly before school starts."

The district has 38 portable classrooms in use. The plan is to eliminate them by the end of the $1 billion school modernization program. School #46 is among the schools that will get upgrades.
