The National Weather Service has confirmed the storm that touched down in Chemung County was a tornado.
The storm's strong winds took down power lines and damaged homes in the area. Neighbors say the storm caught them by surprise, and even more surprising was the scene after the storm. This morning, many woke up to see the damage the storm caused to their homes. Shingles are ripped off the roofs of houses, and trees have fallen down into roads and front lawns.
"Well, I was in the garage with three or four teenagers here, and they kept hollering and saying, 'Look up in the sky!,' and there was a funnel cloud coming down. Well there was, but it was a small one, but it did a lot of damage," said Erin resident James Brick.
Today, crews were out trying to repair electrical poles.
