Clearing Roads For St. Patrick's Day Parade

East Avenue is a white winter wonderland, but soon it will be covered with green.

"It's probably the best view for the parade because it starts here on East Avenue and Alexander Street,"

The annual St. Patrick's Day parade is set for Saturday. Bar owners are banking on the city clearing the streets to cash in on the big crowds.

"Hopefully they can do it in the next couple days here,"

The city says it does not need the luck of the Irish to get it done.

"We've been planning for this. We were hoping we wouldn't get 20 some inches of snow right before it but we'll be ready to go,"

Thirty people will clear the main parade road on East Avenue and Main Street. Then they will work on the side streets. That is where people participating in the parade will line up. As for the sidewalks- it's just old-fashioned shoveling. People looking forward to the parade say a little snow would not stop them from celebrating.

"We're used to it. We're conditioned New Yorkers, so it's second nature to us," Jessica Templar said.

"It doesn't bother me at all. I lived here most of my life so I'm kind of used to it," Linda Mangione said.

The parade is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.
