Congressman Chris Collins is urging local fire companies to apply for federal grants to help protect firefighters and the public from danger.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is opening the application period for its Fire Prevention and Safety grants on February 18 and companies will have until March 21 to complete the process.

FEMA will be awarding more than $32 million in grants, with the funding coming from the Department of Homeland Security's budget for Fiscal Year 2013.

"Federal grant funding is a critical component of how our local fire departments, the majority of which are staffed by dedicated volunteers, fund the purchase of life-saving equipment and development of safety training programs," Congressman Collins said.
