Dozens of students ate free breakfast and lunch at Gates-Chili high school today. It's through the USDA summer food service program. All students 18 and younger can get free meals every weekday through August 15th. There is no income requirement and you don't even have to live in gates -chili.
School reps say it's getting harder to provide meals that are delicious and nutritious. Debbi Beauvais, the School District Nutrition Supervisor for Gates-Chili, said, "With the new regulations from the federal government, it's getting more and more challenging because we have to look at the fat, we have to look at the sodium. whole grains is not a kid favorite but hopefully we're introducing foods to kids for the first time , and they enjoy them and they'll learn to eat them on a regular basis."
The summer meals program also sends meals out to community rec centers and playgrounds. Nearly 13,000 meals are served over a 6 week period.
