Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was in Avon Tuesday to tour the Zion House and meet with local female veterans.

The Zion House is the first transitional housing in New York State for female veterans who are homeless. They have room for seven women. Most get help from veterans agencies and service providers during their stay. Gillibrand hosted a discussion board to talk with veteran service providers on issues women vets face. Statistics show approximately 14,000 female vets spent at least one night in a shelter in 2011.

"Through the Zion House they're getting the support they need. They're getting the support they need to get back on their feet, to learn skills, to get a job and reintegrate back into the community," Gillibrand said.

According to the census, there are 1.6 million female vets in the country. Click here to learn more about the Zion House.
