Grants Announced to Buy Bulletproof Vests for Local Police

The funds come from items seized in criminal investigations.
Some local police departments are getting help buying bullet proof vests.  Attorney General Eric Schneiderman was in town today to announce grants to buy the equipment.  The funds come from items seized in criminal investigations.  More than 26,000 will go to the Rochester police department for 62 new vests.   Schneiderman added that program also helps replace old ones, "Bullet proof vests do not have an infinite life so in addition to providing vests for new officers, this program enables people to replace vests."

Rochester police officer Luca Martini spoke at the press conference about how a bulletproof vest saved his life when he was shot in 2009.  Also, last Monday, a vest likely saved the life of an NYPD officer who was shot multiple times while attempting to arrest a wanted sex offender.
