GRE Business Report: December 9th

A look at the top business headlines.
Gas prices are slowly inching up. AAA reports the national average for the price of a regular gallon of gas has increased a tenth of a cent Sunday. That is the third consecutive increase. The national average now sits at $3.26. But that is still a penny less than the average a week ago.

The unemployment rate has fallen to seven percent, the lowest it has been since November 2008. This news comes as more people say they have found jobs and joined the labor force. The U.S. economy added more than 200,000 jobs in November. Analysts say the strongest sectors are transportation, warehousing, health care and manufacturing. This is encouraging news for the 11 million Americans who are still unemployed.

The merger between American Airlines and U.S. Airways has been given the go-ahead after the Supreme Court refused to hear a request from a consumer group that wanted to block the deal. The group feared the merger would raise ticket prices and limit customers' choices. American Airlines and U.S. Airways could complete the deal Monday, which would create the world's biggest airline.
