Greece Olympia Teacher and Coach Dies at age 50

Steven DeRooy spent 29 years coaching at Greece Olympia.
Long-time Greece Central School District Physical Education Teacher Steven DeRooy died suddenly last night at age 50.  DeRooy began his career in Greece in 1984 as the freshman basketball coach at Olympia High School. He was hired as a physical education (PE) teacher in
1995. Mr. DeRooy taught adaptive PE and worked with students in every district building. He also coached many Greece athletes in a variety of different sports and worked with Greece Special Olympians. Mr. DeRooy is perhaps best known for his 29 years with the Olympia boys’ basketball program, serving as the Varsity coach since 1996. He was also the chairman of the Greece Athlete of the Year program since 2000 and served on the Greece Olympia Sports Hall of Fame committee.  He was widely regarded as a leader in adaptive PE teacher.

Olympia Athletic Director Kim Henshaw said Steve DeRooy was also someone students looked up to, “He went above and beyond to ensure kids were able to participate."  Henshaw added that he often did the little extras like volunteering to drive students without transportation to practices and games. “Every penny he ever made coaching went back to the program to fund summer leagues, buy shirts and benefit kids.”

Counseling will be available for students and staff in need at the Olympia Auditorium from 1-3 p.m. today. Olympia is also planning a remembrance for Mr. DeRooy at a later date.
