Patrick Phelan was officially sworn in as the new Chief of Police in Greece.
Patrick Phelan was officially sworn in as the new Chief of Police in Greece.

Phelan, a former captain, has been with the department for 25 years. His father, Gerald Phelan, was Greece Police Chief for almost 20 years before retiring in 1993. In fact, at least one member of the Phelan family has been on the force during the last 96 years.

"My great uncle and I had two uncles that were RPD captain and a deputy chief, my father was the chief, so we've got a long history of police work in my family," Chief Phelan said.

"The odds of two men in the same family in successive generations in the same department becoming chief, the odds have to astronomical against that," Gerald Phelan said.

Phelan takes over for Todd Baxter who is set to begin a new job as the executive director of the Veterans Outreach Center.
