Greece Teacher Resigns Amid Investigation

A teacher resigns after photo posted online.
A Greece Olympia High School teacher has resigned amidst a school district investigation.

Greece School District says the resignation came Tuesday.

Last Thursday, a parent came forward to school officials about a photograph taken by her daughter inside school.

That photo showed American Sign Language teacher, Sharon Duffy, standing in front of a white board which had a vulgar phrase written at the top.

The parent, Mary Jo Norgaard, said the photo was take during class in the Fall of 2013. She had expected to meet with the Greece School Superintendent on Wednesday.

Norgaard posted it to social media last week. Some people questioned the validity of the photograph, however, Norgaard stood by her daughter's account and verification.

Norgaard did not want to go on camera on Tuesday, but said this: "While I do understand the gravity of the situation and the possible repercussions for this teacher, I stands firmly by my decision to go public with it."

The district took immediate action and removed Duffy from the classroom into a non-instructional position during the investigation.

"As educators, we are advocates for students, their safety and achievement and can expect to be held to high standards of conduct at all times," said Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams. "We thank those who brought this troubling matter to our attention."

Duffy was a teacher at Greece Central Schools since 2002.
