Lilac Festival Closed for Today, May 16th

Heavy rains caused the closure.
The Rochester Lilac Festival will not open at Highland Park on Friday, May 16. Monroe County officials made this decision early this morning because of saturated conditions in the park after a heavy all-night rain that will continue throughout the day on Friday.

Tonight’s headliner, Willie Nile, will perform at Sticky Lips, 830 Jefferson Road, at 9:30 p.m.

“Protecting the condition of the park is always a top priority,” said Larry Staub, director of the Monroe County Department of Parks. “With saturated turf conditions, the daily festival activity, which includes deliveries, set-up, vehicle and foot traffic, would risk damage to the park grounds.”

The festival had already closed parking areas in Highland Park earlier this week after heavy rains Tuesday night and Wednesday morning made it impossible to park cars on inundated ground.

Festival Producer Jeff Springut said that the Lilac Festival plans to reopen on Saturday morning, May 17, as scheduled.
