Lilac Festival Preps

The 2014 Lilac Festival is just a few weeks away.
Purple is beginning to pop up all over Highland Park, as preparations for the annual Lilac Festival are well underway.

Some fan favorites return this year, including the Lilac Run, musical guests, and of course, the great food.  The star of the show remains the lilacs themselves, which have grown in the festival's 116 year history to include 1200 bushes of 500 different varieties.  To this day, this rite of spring...remains rich in history.

"Over a century ago, the festival of sorts began informally and spontaneously, when several thousand people gathered on a Sunday in May to stroll around the park, and take in the sights and smells of the lilacs," said Monroe County Parks Director Larry Staub.

News 8 is a proud sponsor of the Lilac Festival.  The festival kicks off May 9th and runs through the 18th at Highland Park.
