New Student Vaccine Requirements for New York

Students going into kindergarten or 6th grade are now required to have 2 doses of the Chicken Pox vaccine, and 3-5 doses of the Polio vaccine.

Local health officials are urging parents about the importance of getting their children vaccinated.  For the first time in 10 years, New York state has aligned themselves with some new federal standards and now students going into kindergarten or 6th grade are required to have two doses of the Chicken Pox vaccine, and 3 to 5 doses of the Polio vaccine.

John Ricci of the Monroe County Health Department says, "if your child doesn't have all of the required shots come September, they will be excluded from school.  They'll get behind and it will be inconvenient for parents; it's just not a good thing."

For all other vaccines, students will be required to have age-appropriate doses in accordance with the State Health Department.
