New York Minute: January 1st

A look at the top stories across the state.
Millions rang in the new year in celebrations around the world. The biggest party in the U.S. was in New York City. An estimated one million people packed Times Square to watch the ball drop. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor pressed the button to lower the crystal ball and led the 60-second countdown to midnight. Afterwards, organizers showered the crowd with thousands of pounds of confetti.

William De Blasio became New York City's 109th mayor just after midnight. He is the first mayoral change in the last 12 years. De Blasio, surrounded by his family and close friends, took the oath of office outside his home in Brooklyn despite temperatures in the 20s. The swearing in was officiated by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. A more formal inauguration will happen at noon on New Year's Day at City Hall. Former President Bill Clinton will officiate at the ceremony.
