New York Minute: January 31st

A look at the stories trending across the state.
An explosion at a state office building in Albany sent two people to the hospital. Emergency officials say a tank containing an outdated extinguishing chemical exploded as it was being removed. The fire chief says workers were loading a halon tank into the back of a truck when something went wrong. Halon is an outdated extinguishing agent that used to be used in computer rooms. This particular tank had been obsolete and waiting to be removed for about ten years.

Some New York City airport workers got good news this week. They are getting a raise effective immediately. The Port Authority ordered a $1 per hour increase for minimum wage contract earners at LaGuardia and JFK. Skycaps, airplane cleaners and baggage handlers among others will get up to $10.10 an hour. That is in line with what President Obama says the federal minimum wage should be.
