New York Minute: January 8th

The top stories making headlines statewide.
More than 100 retired New York City Police officers and firefighters have been indicted in a massive social security disability scam involving hundreds of millions of dollars. Authorities say more than half the recipients received funds for fraudulent claims for PTSD in the wake of the September 11th terror attacks on the World Trade Center. Law enforcement officers and firefighters were allegedly coached on how to behave during doctor visits in order to qualify for full disability benefits.

A battle over early childhood education is putting New York City's new mayor against Governor Cuomo. They both want to expand pre-K programs, but are divided on how to pay for it. To tax or not to tax? Cuomo says no to raising taxes while De Blasio says yes, but only on the rich. Mayor De Blasio is asking the state for permission to tax rich New Yorkers. He wants five years of dedicated funding to go strictly to pre-K and after school programs.
