Syracuse (7-3 overall, 4-2 BIG EAST)won its seventh game of the season at Rutgers, 13-10, on Saturday and earned itself a bowl berth for the first time since 2004. The victory at Rutger Stadium is the fourth BIG EAST road victory of the season, marking the first time in program history that the Orange posted a 4-0 league record on the road.
Junior quarterback Ryan Nassib completed 16-of-31 pass attempts for 214 yards and a touchdown, while freshman kicker Ross Krautman had a pair of field goals, including the game-winner with just more than one minute remaining and a career-long 48-yard blast in the win. Senior running back Delone Carter led with 85 yards on 18 carries while junior Marcus Sales had five receptions for 73 yards.
Senior Doug Hogue led the defense with 12 total tackles, including two for a loss of yards while classmate Derrell Smith had 10, including 1.5 sacks.
As the offense worked to find its rhythm, the Orange defense continued to force turnovers as senior cornerback Mike Holmes recovered a fumble on the Rutgers 32-yard line. The Orange offense took over, marching 32-yards on six plays to put seven points on the board. Nassib capped the scoring drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to junior running back Antwon Bailey.
Following the score, the Orange defense continued to stifle the Scarlet Knights (4-5, 1-3) forcing them to a three-and-out on their ensuing possession.
Rutgers gained some momentum after intercepting a Nassib pass attempt at the Syracuse 40-yard line. Despite the turnover, the SU defense kept the Scarlet Knights out of the end zone as they capped a nine-play, 31-yard drive with a 26-yard field goal to cut the deficit, 7-3, with 4:38 left on the clock.
The hosts defense forced a fumble on the ensuing drive, by the Orange defense stood up to its billing as 10th best in the nation, holding the Scarlet Knights to a three-and-out.
Rutgers took its first lead of the contest out of the locker room as wide receiver Jeremy Deering rushed for a 19-yard touchdown, putting the hosts up, 10-7.
Freshman placekicker Ross Krautman tied the game with a career-long 48-yard field goal with 3:19 remaining in the third quarter. The score capped a 12-play, 58-yard drive for the Orange which tied the game at 10.
Krautman sealed the victory with a game-winning 24-yard field goal to produce the final, 13-10.
Syracuse will return to the Carrier Dome to host Connecticut on Nov. 20 (7:00 p.m., ESPNU) and Boston College on Nov. 27.
