A report shows the Rochester City School District has the highest number of homeless students in Upstate New York. The data comes from the State Education Department. It shows Rochester had 1,820 homeless students in the 2012-2013 school year. That compares to 957 in Syracuse and 909 in Buffalo.
Mayor Lovely Warren said she's concerned about the statistics. "It's sad. We look at our social issues in the city and that's why we are ranked one of the highest in childhood poverty and it's reflective of the issues we need to deal with in our city," she said.
The state data shows the number of school-aged homeless children in New York state nearly doubled in five years.
