The number of grandparents raising their children's children is not a new phenomenon.   However, statistics show it's a situation that's becoming more and more common in the United States.

That's according to an article on the website About.com that estimates that nearly six million U.S. children - or about 8% - are being cared for on a regular basis or raised by their grandparents.

The website further goes on to say that the number of children living with their grandparents has risen by 50% in the past decade. There are no parents in the lives of about one-third of those children.

According to experts, it's a trend that's crossing all races and socio-economic classes due to divorce, neglect, teen pregnancy, the death of the parents, incarceration, unemployment, abuse, alcohol/ drug use or abandonment.
