Rochester Curling Club

The Rochester Curling Club gives people in the area a unique opportunity to embrace the winter season.
Lewis Elkin, of the RIT Skating Rink, introduced the sport of curling to Rochester in 1961, with the creation of a curling clinic.

Since then, the club has grown in size and popularity. Its curlers have seen great success. Jeff Pulli started curling to spend time with friends.

"A couple of high school buddies of mine decided to get into it," Pulli said. "A friend of ours got us out onto the ice and all of us fell in love with it and we have been doing it ever since."

Rebecca Andrew says curling is a family affair.

"My dad was really into it so he looked up where we could curl and there was a club about 40 minutes from our house," Andrew said. "They were having an open house so we went down and got started and have been curling ever since."

Jeff says the excitement surrounding the Winter Games brings attention to the sport. He says curling is growing in our area partly because it gives people a unique opportunity to embrace the winter season.

"It's a little different," Pulli says. "It's a fun game to watch and even more fun to play. It also works well here in Upstate New York because the winters can be long if you are now a skier, skater or something like that. It gives you something fun to do."

Jeff and Rebecca will compete at the National Championship in Philadelphia in March. Both had to qualify, Jeff in Minnesota and Rebecca in North Dakota. Rebecca has gone to Junior Nationals but this is her first Women's Nationals. She is excited to compete on a bigger stage against the best in the world.

"It's a bigger deal," Andrew said. "We are playing against people who have been to the Olympics, people who have been to World Championships. I'm really excited."

The Rochester Curling Club has a youth program for children 13 and under and a junior program for people between the ages of 14 and 21. The junior program has produced several champions.
