Sabres Select More Forwards at 2014 NHL Draft

A day after drafting center Sam Reinhart with the 2nd overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Level Draft, the Sabres continued to add to their pool of forward prospects with 6 more taken in Rounds 2 through 7.

With the first pick of the 2nd round, the Sabres took left winger Brendan Lemieux (6'0", 206 lbs., 3/15/95 DOB). Son of 4-time Stanley Cup champion and 1995 Conn Smythe Trophy winner Claude Lemieux, Brendan played two seasons with the Barrie Colts of the OHL. Last year, he finished with 53 points (27+26) and led the club with 145 penalty minutes.

The Sabres used the 14th pick of the 2nd round (44th overall) on center Eric Cornel (6'2", 186 lbs., 4/11/96 DOB). Seen as a strong two-way player, he picked up 78 points (29+49) in 131 games over two seasons with Peterborough of the OHL. 

Five picks later in the second round, the Sabres tabbed left winger Vaclav Karabacek (6'0", 179 lbs., 5/2/96 DOB) with the 49th overall pick. Last season, Karabacek played with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL where he finished fifth in rookie scoring with 47 points (21+26). 

Buffalo's first draft pick not used on a forward came in the 3rd round. The Sabres first of two 3rd round picks went to Swedish goalie Jonas Johansson (6'4", 187 lbs., 9/19/95 DOB). He's seen as an athletic goalie with a big frame, he spent last season with Brynas IF of the Swedish Hockey League where he appeared in four games and recorded a 2.32 GAA and a .914 save percentage.

The only defenseman taken by the Sabres in the 2014 NHL Entry Level Draft was Brycen Martin (6'1", 195 lbs., 5/9/96 DOB) with the 74th overall pick. Last season, he played with Swift Current of the WHL and ranked second among defenseman on the team with 47 points (6+31) in 72 games.

The Sabres did not have a pick in the 4th round. They took high schoolers in Rounds 5 and 6. Left winger Maxwell Willman in the 5th round went 121st overall and center Christopher Brown in the 6th round with pick #151.

Buffalo's final draft pick was used on Swedish right winger Victor Olofsson (5'11", 177 lbs., 7/18/95 DOB) in the 7th round at 181st overall.
