Strong Pitching Allows Wings Past Hens

Gibson shines as Wings inch closer to .500

The Red Wings used an impressive pitching performance from Kyle Gibson to pick up a 3-1 win over Toledo Mud Hens Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. The teams meet again Monday at 7:05 p.m.

Gibson had an easy first inning on the mound for the Wings. Then in the second, after a walk and a single put runners on first and second with one out, Ramon Cabera singled in the first run of the game for the Mud Hens.

After Gibson held the Mud Hens scoreless in the top of the third inning, the Red Wings offense came to life in the bottom half of the frame. Doug Bernier led off the inning with a double and reached third due to a fielding error on the play. A sacrifice fly from Drew Butera scored Bernier from third, tying the game at one. The following batter, Antoan Richardson, displayed his top speed and reached base via a bunt single. With Richardson on first and one out, Brian Dinkelman lifted a two-run home run to right field, giving the Wings a 3-1 lead through three innings.

Gibson continued to mow down Toledo batters in the fourth and fifth innings, recording a total of six strikeouts in the first five innings alone.

Both offenses would remain silent in the sixth and seventh innings, keeping the score at 3-1 in favor of Rochester. In the top of the eighth inning, Michael Tonkin came on to relieve Gibson and picked up right where he left off. Tonkin retired the Mud Hens in order, maintaining a two-run lead for Rochester.

Detroit Tigers top prospect Bruce Rondon came on in relief in the top of the eighth inning and escaped the inning unscathed, keeping the Mud Hens within striking distance going into the final inning.

Tonkin stayed in the game in the ninth inning, attempting to earn his first Triple-A save. Tonkin retired the Mud Hens in order, picking up his first Triple-A save and preserving a 3-1 win for the Red Wings.

Both Bernier and Deibinson Romero extended their hitting streaks to eight games.
