A brisk walk can send your fat genes packing.
British researchers say that a dozen genes linked to obesity can be shut off with just moderate amounts of exercise each week.
They studied all 12 variations of so-called fat genes and compared it to the exercise habits of more than 20,000 people. They found that just two hours of moderate physical activity a week could slash the risk of obesity by 40%.
Scientists at the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, England say walking the dog for a half-hour every day qualifies, as does biking to work. They recommend spreading out your physical activity throughout the week.
Their findings are posted online at the peer-reviewed website PLoS Medicine.
