Sutherland Handles J-D To Win State Title

Greendyke scores 19, earns tourny MVP
Liz Greendyke scored 19 points as Sutherland jumped out to an early lead and held Jamesville-Dewitt at arms-length for the entirety of a 57-41 win in the Class A state final.

It's the Knights' first state championship since 2006.

Santita Ebangwese and Greendyke combined to get the game's first six points and Sutherland held J-D scoreless deep into the first quarter. Sutherland led 8-5 after the first and opened the second quarter on a 10-1 run to push the lead to 19-6. The bulge was trimmed a bit to 23-14 at the half.

J-D started the third quarter with back-to-back buckets to close within 23-18, but it would their last competitive moment of the game.

The Knights answered with an 8-0 run to make the score 31-18. Greendyke nailed a three to close out the third quarter with Sutherland up 36-23 and hit another to make it 48-34 with two and a half minutes to play. She was named tournament MVP.

"We're not a bunch of superstar basketball players. We're not a bunch of D-1 recruits," Greendyke said. "We're other athletes. Most of us do 2-3 sports and for us to come together and be able to win states, I didn't think this was possible at all before our first game. As the season went on, it gradually crept up on us that we could do something really special and for it to happen its just so amazing."

Sutherland's season isn't over yet. The Knights earned a berth into New York State's Federation tournament which includes champions from various New York City and private school leagues.

Sutherland will face Cardinal O'Hara from Buffalo on Friday at 10am. The game will be played at Albany's Times-Union Center. Cardinal O'Hara faced two Section Five schools this year and lost to both: a 30-point blowout against Penfield in Buffalo and a nine-point defeat at Gates-Chili.

The winner will take on New York City's PSAL champions for the Federation title on Sunday, March 23rd.
