After just over three years as the department's head officer, James Sheppard is stepping down as chief of the RPD.
After just over three years as the department's head officer, James Sheppard is stepping down as chief of the Rochester Police Department. 

Chief Sheppard will end his tenure at police chief on December 31st. News 8 first told you that Sheppard had previously filed his retirement papers back in October, but subsequently withdrew them. During the press event, Sheppard said he withdrew his request in October to avoid the appearance of there being some tension between him and Rochester mayor-elect Lovely Warren. Sheppard was appointed chief in November of 2010 by former mayor Bob Duffy.
