Why ROC: Jazz Festival

The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival is set for June 20-28 in downtown Rochester.
The Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival is set for June 20-28 in downtown Rochester.

Executive Director and Co-Producer Marc Iacona discussed the festival and its place on Rochester's summer calendar "to do" list during our Why ROC interview Wednesday on News 8 at Sunrise.

The Jazz Festival is now in its 13th year.  Iacona said the focus each year is on making it better by remaining true to the standards upon which it was founded.  In addition to headlining acts, there is a wide range of musical offerings at dozens of venues in the downtown area, and free concerts to give everyone access to the jazz.

Iacona said the economic impact of the festival is approximately $10 million a year, when you factor in the venues, restaurants, hotels and other offerings.  The festival impacts businesses within and outside the footprint of the event.  It has also boosted Rochester's global profile, with artists and fans representing 20 different countries.

Rochester's willingness to embrace the festival has directly led to its success, according to Iacona.  He's often told the streets of downtown are transformed during the nine days, with the feel of a European village.  The support of the City, State, and corporate sponsors have helped the event gain in status and popularity.

Tickets for this year's Jazz Festival are available at the ticket shop on East Ave. and Gibbs St. in Rochester, or by calling (585) 454-2060, and online, click here
