Yohan Pino, the Wings’ best pitcher through the first month of the season, didn’t have his best stuff Friday night.
The right-hander, who came in leading the league in almost every meaningful pitching statistic, allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks in just 2 1/3 innings as the Wings lost the series opener against the Toledo Mud Hens, 7-2, Friday night at Fifth-Third Field.
The Red Wings (16-17) have now dropped a season-high five straight games and have fallen below the .500 mark for the first time since April 19 (7-8).
Pino retired the first five batters he faced until grazing James McCann with a 1-2 pitch and two outs in the second. Luis Exposito followed with a single and Ben Guez walked to load the bases for Jordan Lennerton. The nine-hole hitter, mired in a 1-for-20 slump, put the Mud Hens in front and snapped Pino’s 16 2/3 innings scoreless streak, ripping a two-run single to right field. Daniel Fields followed with an RBI double that gave Toledo the 3-0 lead after two innings.
After the ninth error of the season on Wings third baseman Deibinson Romero in the third, Pino would surrender an unearned run before being pulled after just 2 1/3 innings.
Pino (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing the most hits and runs in any of his eight outings (four starts) this season.
The Red Wings pushed across their first run of the game in the fifth on a James Berersford RBI ground out. However, they would leave the bases loaded as Oswaldo Arcia drove a ball to the wall in right that Guez was able to make the catch on the warning track to end the threat.
Beresford finished the night 2-for-4 with both RBI for the Red Wings. On the road trip, the Wings second baseman is 7-for-18 (.389) with 7 RBI.
Eric Farris picked up his first three-hit game of the season as he leads the Wings with 13 multi-hit games this season. Chris Herrmann, making his first start for Rochester since being optioned down on Thursday, also collected three hits – including a triple – on Friday.
The Mud Hens (14-21) put the game away scoring two unearned runs in the fifth inning off reliever Ryan Pressly that made it 6-1.
Mike Hessman capped the scoring for the Mud Hens hitting his 398th career minor league homer – a solo shot off Wings southpaw Matt Hoffman in the seventh inning.
The Wings send RHP Alex Meyer (1-0, 3.45) to the bump on Saturday night looking to put a stop to the losing streak. First pitch from Toledo is set for 7:00 p.m.
