The Rush woman accused of driving drunk and killing a Henrietta mother this weekend posted bail Monday. The crash happened Saturday night at the intersection of Calkins Road and Hylan Drive in Henrietta. Amanda Hunt, 25, faces felony aggravated vehicular homicide and DWI charges. Hunt was behind the wheel of the car that killed Lisa Welk, 51.
Carolyn Wickman reflects on a 30 year friendship with Lisa Welk. "She could be a whirlwind. Ya know, she was just so full of energy. Ya know, she was a very unique person in her own. I've never known anybody like her," said Carolyn Wickman, Rochester.
Welk was heading home from the mall with her 15 year old daughter when a car driven by Amanda Hunt struck Welk's car. Witnesses told police they saw Hunt's car speeding down Calkins Road just before the crash. At one point heading into oncoming traffic. Hunt now faces felony aggravated vehicular homicide and DWI charges. Hunt was convicted of driving while ability impaired in 2011.
"We tell people time and time again, you can't get behind the wheel after you've had too much to drink. And people, they don't think of the consequences. And here, there's another tragedy occurring to a family in our community. A tragedy that they'll never overcome," said Sandra Doorley, Monroe County District Attorney.
Gates police chief Jim Vanbrederode and Welk became friends in school and would eventually be a part of each other's weddings.
"When you're driving drunk, ya know, that car is like a missile. It can end up anywhere and it doesn't just kill yourself. A lot of times it kills innocent people that are just going about their business, two miles from her house. Saturday night, was out shopping with her daughter at the mall. Coming home. And it all changed just like that," said Jim Vanbrederode, Gates Police Chief.
Lisa Welk was active at her daughter's school in Rush-Henrietta, volunteering on district committees. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Rochester where a service in her memory will be held.
Amanda Hunt was celebrating her 25th birthday Saturday when the crash occurred. She'll be back in Henrietta Town Court Thursday.
