Eastridge Wins Thriller Over Wilson

Lancers need late INT to make sectional finals
Justin Wright intercepted a deflected pass in the final minute as (2)Eastridge hung on to knock out (3)Wilson in an up-and-down Class A semifinal thriller at Sahlen's Stadium Friday night.

Jametrius Lewis rushed for 155 yards with two TDs and added 128 yards and a score through the air to lead Eastridge. Jayvon Hampton also rushed for 107 yards with two trips to the house. CJ Turner had a one-handed 35 yard touchdown reception.

For Wilson, Demetrius Richardson had a 70 yard kick return for a touchdown and a 79-yard catch for a touchdown on back to back touches. Jacquan McCullough totaled 123 yards of offense with a TD rushing and passing. Anthony Monroe had Wilson's other score.

Eastridge jumped out to a 13-0 lead, scoring touchdowns on the very first play after a pair of turnovers. A Wilson fumble gave the Lancers possession at the Wildcat 35 and Lewis immediately hit Turner for six. Later in the first, a Wilson muffed punt preceded Lewis' 48 yard touchdown scamper.

However, Wilson settled down and answered with a quick 47 yard drive following a squibbed kickoff. Monroe took it in from 14 yards out to cut the lead to 13-6. Three minutes into the second quarter, McCullough scrambled for an 18-yard touchdown. The two point conversion pass gave Wilson a 14-13 lead.

The lead lasted all of three plays. Hampton took the second play from scrimmage 47 yards for a score and the Lancers had a 19-14 lead at halftime.

Lewis intercepted McCullough to open the second half and the Lancers had first and goal at the one. However, Wilson held and forced a 32-yard field goal by Jeff Palermo to put Eastridge up eight points.

This is where things got fun.

Richardson took a bouncing kick at his own 30 and raced down the left sideline for a TD. McCullough hit Akinlawon Robinson for two and 2's were wild on the scoreboard at 22-all.

Eastridge opened the fourth quarter with an 8-play, 50-yard drive that ended with Lewis going in from two yards out. Wilson answered two plays when McCullough hit Richardson with a quick throw at the 21. Richard read two blocks and was gone for a 79 yard score. However, Ricky Hagins sacked McCullough on the two point try and the Lancers still led 29-28.

Hampton ran the ensuing kickoff down to the Wilson 16 and scored three plays later on a two yard run, but Wilson was still within one score at 36-28.

Wilson went three and out on their next drive and the Lancers seemed ready to run out the clock. After three first downs, the Lancers threw an incomplete pass on 3rd and 5 with 51 seconds to play from the Wilson 20. Eastridge sent out Palermo to try what would have been a game clinching field goal. The kick never got past the line of scrimmage.

Earl English smothered the kick and linebacker Xavier Taggert picked up the blocked ball. Taggert had nothing but green in front of him, but Lewis was able to run him down at the Eastridge 36.

The next play was a pass that was deflected more than once and eventually gathered in by Wright to finally snuff out Wilson's comeback hopes.

Eastridge moves on to play (4)Victor in next week's title game. The Blue Devils rolled over top-seeded Brockport 27-0 Friday night.
