Fitness expert Jodi Stern of Pilates Plus discussed the proper way to exercise the back, neck and shoulders Tuesday morning on News 8 at Sunrise.

Stern said it's important to stretch the muscles in the areas around the back, neck and shoulders prior to the workout and then focus on strengthening those same muscles during the workout.  "You need to open up and loosen up your muscles in order to protect yourself," she said.

Building up the core muscles, doing anything that supports your spine is best.  She noted running is tough on your muscles and creates a lot of pressure on your back.  She recommended water walking as a great low impact way to build strength.

Stern also said strengthening your back, neck and shoulders will enhance other physical activities.
