Fatal I-490 Crash

One dead after a wrong way crash on 1-490.
One person died early this morning in a wrong way crash on I-490 near exit 6.

Monroe County Sheriff's deputies said a car had been traveling west bound in the east bound lane of Route 490 and it collided head on with another vehicle as it passed exit 6 (Route 204). The vehicle that was struck was being driven by Tatiana Tchekina, 69, of Rochester, who died at the scene. Her husband Oleh Krysa, who was also in the car was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

According to the school's website, Tchekina was an assistant professor of accompanying at the Eastman School of Music and Krysa is a professor of violin at the school.

The driver of the vehicle that was traveling the wrong way is Thomas Rome, 37. Rome was alone in his vehicle and was found unconscious at the scene but smelled of alcohol. Rome had a possible broken femur and severe injury to his left arm and was transported to Strong.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
