Rochester's youth, particularly African-American males, face many challenges that put them at risk. These include school failure, drug and alcohol abuse, school and community violence, teen pregnancy, incarceration and disease.

R3G is a new effort that stands for "Raising Grades, Graduates and Gentlemen. R3G is a 13-week employment and enrichment initiative that provides job training and employment, as well as culturally-based enrichment workshops for 20 black male Rochester studetns. These students will work 10 hours per week at a city host site where they will receive on-the-job training and work experience, plus two hours a week of enrichment that will be presented to them by successful black male role models.
