January is Family Fit Lifestyle Month and Dr. Colleen Fogarty of Highland Family Medicine discussed the initiative Thursday on News 8 at Sunrise.

Dr. Fogarty said studies show it's easier to stick to choices when you have the support of loved ones.  A healthy lifestyle is about eating healthy and staying active.  Parents are able to set a positive example for their children when it comes to eating and exercising.

Eating right is half of the equation.  Dr. Fogarty said make half of your grains whole.  Choose whole-grain foods such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice and lowfat popcorn.  Vary your veggies and focus on fruit.  Also, go lean with protein by eating lean or lowfat meat, chicken, turkey and fish.  Mix in some beans and peas.  Use fish and nut based oils and minimized your sugar intake.

Staying active is the other half of the equation.  Dr. Fogarty said adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week, while children need at least 60 minutes.  She recommends reducing the TV and computer time by getting outside for a walk or catch.  Make birthday parties activity based, like skating or bowling.

Make family time, active time.
