We received six nominations for the teacher we are honoring tonight with a News 8 Golden Apple Award. It was a lot of fun surprising Science Teacher Karen Brion at Victor Senior High School.

You really take notice when you get passionate letters from several students nominating one teacher. That's what happened with Karen Brion.

Tori Mattick explains why she nominated Mrs. Brion. "I think her best quality is her ability to connect with the students and make relationships that don't just last the year that they take the class, but throughout all of High School.

Laurel Lehman says it's "The way that she always there for her students. Just always there to support her students. After school, before school, whatever, she's there."

Morgan Bolger adds "She has such a great passion for Biology and that makes the students really excited to come to class."

"She really loves what she does and she loves her students" says Claire Sobraske. "So you can always go to her for help. And you can always talk to her at a personal level, not just as a teacher. She's a friend to everyone too."

What is Karen Brion's secret to connecting with kids? "I'm a mom. I don't know. I love them, I love their enthusiasm, and I love what I teach. I love my science and I try to make it interesting for them."

Students say A-P Bio is demanding, but Karen makes them want to come to class. "Good! I love teaching the class" she says. "I've been teaching it for a very long time. But they are the best. I have the best students. I am the luckiest teacher in the whole school."

Karen Brion is a News 8 Golden Apple Award winner. If you scroll down you can read all the letters we received from students nominating her.

Dear News 8,

Mrs. Brion is a phenomenal teacher. Her enthusiasm carries throughout the entire classroom to create an environment that is both instructive and entertaining. She has found the nearly impossible balance between being the dedicated informative teacher and the funny energetic teacher. Her goal is to make every student thoroughly understand the material. To do so, she sacrifices her time and resources. Mrs. Brion holds review classes at the busiest times of the year regardless of her workload to assure that all students score highly on the exams. She constantly makes real-life comparisons to help her students better comprehend the material. What sets Mrs. Brion apart is her ability to connect with the students. She makes the effort to get to know every student that walks through her classroom door. Her energy and personality makes students excited to learn and devote their time own to Biology. She is a dedicated teacher, passionate for Biology, an excellent role model, and she has created the best learning environment that I have ever been a part of.

Sincerely,

Morgan Bolger

Dear News 8,

Mrs. Brion was my AP Biology teacher last year when I was a junior. She inspired me to apply to college as a biology major. Mrs. Brion has a love for what she teaches like no other teacher that I have ever had, and she has a strong personal connection with every single one of her students. This teacher gives every student an opportunity to succeed and always makes sure everyone understands the needed material no matter what. Not only is she an excellent teacher, she is a great friend as well. Anyone could have a casual conversation with her because she is so easy to relate with. Mrs. Brion deserves the Golden Apple Award because she is always there to teach, inspire, and talk with her students.

Sincerely,

Claire Sobraske

Dear News 8,

Mrs. Brion is absolutely the epitome of an exemplary teacher. She genuinely cares for her students and goes above and beyond to ensure that everyone is able to excel in her classes. Her excitement and enthusiasm for the subjects that she teaches is palpable, and her success is well-known among students and faculty alike. Not only are her classes full, if not exceeding capacity, through student requests, she is also one of the most frequent student nominators for Principal's Recognition, as she truly cares for and appreciates her students. She is supportive of students both inside and outside the classroom, often attending Victor sporting events (even though her kids attend/attended Canandaigua, our arch-rivals!), as well as being remarkably caring in regards to her students individually as well - from casually inquiring about students' most recent sporting event success to calming down stressed out overachievers. Many people take Mrs. Brion's science classes, AP Bio and Forensics, even though they may have previously disliked science just because they have heard through the grapevine of how fantastic a teacher she is. Mrs. Brion has been a teacher at Victor for many years, and so the sheer amount positive influence she must have had on her students over the years is irrefutable, and more than deems her worthy of the Golden Apple Award.

Sincerely,

Laurel Lehman

Dear News 8,

Mrs. Brion was the absolute best teacher ever! AP Bio was my favorite class because of her and she was great at making connections with her students. She never hesitated to talk to us before class and see how we were doing. Because of her great teaching ability, we have great AP scores every year and every student who has her ends up thinking the same thing: Mrs. Brion deserves this award!

Sincerely,

Tori Mattick

Dear News 8,

Mrs. Brion is perhaps the most enthusiastic teacher i have met, possessing all the qualities of a great teacher. She cares for all of her students and makes sure they reach their potential whether it's AP Bio or Regents Biology, she actually has a passion for school and sports as well of many students of which she follows. Easily favorite class of high school.

Sincerely,

Christopher Mydosh

Dear News 8,

Mrs. Brion is awesome. She not only makes AP understandable but she also makes it fun. She puts in so much effort to see that all of her students understand even the most complex subjects covered in one of the hardest classes Victor High School offers. Ask any guidance counselor and im sure that they will tell you that Mrs. Brion is one of the most demanded teachers in Victor. this is for good reason, she is one of the hardest working and most fun teachers i have had during my time in Victor. She should defiantly be awarded the golden apple award for teaching high school students college level Biology with a high degree of success.

Sincerely,

Jeff Moore
