A free food giveaway receives an overwhelming response from the community. Hundreds lined up in the cold and rain.

Foodlink brought in three trucks of food to give away to families at the Jefferson High School campus. Each of those trucks contained about 5,000 pounds of food. Flyers went out, but then it went viral on social media and through word of mouth and a sea of people showed up. Hundreds upon hundreds of people from across the community started lining up at noon. The lines wrapped around the school building.

The food giveaway did not begin until 3 p.m. Friday. Within two hours Foodlink had to bring in more food, handing out up to 30,000 pounds. Because of the holiday next week, many came to stock up.

"There is a bigger picture here. The poverty rate in our area is so high, the need is extremely high. Just seeing the mass of people here; this is a great thing during the holiday season for them," school principal Mary Andrecolich-Montesano said.
